Attacking the Offseason - New York Giants

Jordan is back with another team from the big apple addressing their offseason priorities

Free Agency

Bring back – Lorenzo Carter and Matt Skura

New Giants GM Joe Schoen has a mammoth task tackling the ugly cap situation. One of a few things that he has inherited that needs fixing. Budgets will be tight but bringing back Lorenzo Carter is the first port of call. Carter showed in the last few games his qualities after a injuries had kept him off the field in 2020 and some of 2021. The Giants wouldn’t have to break the bank or offer a long deal. If Carter can stay injury free in 2022, he would improve the Giants in the pass rush department.

With the lack of money to go chasing big FAs, the Giants will need to look at the draft and pick up

cheap alternatives. Matt Skura would be a cheap option as a back-up, having been okay when filling in when guys went down injured. Look, I’m sure the Giants would like to go in a different direction but this is where they are at. If the price is right, bring him back. Centre Billy Price is also a cheap option as a backup offensive centre.

Bring in – Isaiah McKenzie and Micah Kiser

I’ll try to stop harping on about money, but it’s hard not to be so bleak looking at the Giants. With new HC Brian Daboll heading over from Buffalo, why not bring a reliable wide receiver who knows your system. Isaiah McKenzie has spent 4 years with Daboll, working mainly out of the slot. With the injuries and inconsistency in the Giants wide receiver room, it would be beneficial to add more depth.

Another area to address is the inside line-backer position. When Blake Martinez went down with a

season ending Injury, Reggie Ragland stepped up and served well as a replacement. Martinez could

become a cap casualty and with Ragland and Jaylon Smith hitting FA, they might not be able to bring both guys back. If they can’t then Micah Kiser would be worth taking a chance on. Kiser would be cheap and if he could find his 2020 form it could be a steal.

The Draft

Round 1 Pick 5 – Ikem Ekwonu, OT, North Carolina State

If the Giants are going to give Daniel Jones a chance they need to give him protection. Ikem Ekwonu is a nasty offensive lineman, who plays with aggressiveness on every snap. A mauler in the run game and excellent in pass pro, the sky really is the limit for Ekwonu. Giants LT Andrew Thomas has shown a little bit more of why the Giants drafted him so high in 2020. Ekwonu who played mostly at LT has played inside at guard also. The left side would look increasingly better for Danny Dimes with the big NC State man on the roster.

Round 1 Pick 7 – George Karlaftis, DE, Purdue

With no defensive coordinator in place, we don’t know how the Giants are going to line up.

Defensive end George Karlaftis I believe has the versatility to play in whatever is thrown at him,

which speaks volumes of his mentality and ability. The Giants ranked 4th last in pash rush grade in

PFFs rankings. Karlaftis is a powerhouse who has had to deal with plenty double and triple team

blockers in college.

Round 2 Pick 36 – Darian Kinnard, OG, Kentucky

Darian Kinnard is listed as an offensive tackle who might be better equipped to play inside. I believe Kinnard could still have a career at RT with some fine tuning. He would strengthen the offensive line wherever the Giants decided to position him. The Ohio native has a solid all-round game, but as a run blocker he excels with his brute strength.

Round 3 Pick 67 – Damone Clark, LB, LSU

The Giants need to strengthen the line backer position, especially inside. Damone Clark had a good Senior Bowl and 2021 season, so might go late in the 2 nd round. If he is still here for the Giants it would be a great fit. Clark still has to refine his abilities and you probably won’t see him be an instant day 1 impact. With the right coaching Clark could be a big time playmaker for the Giants.

Round 3 Pick 81 – Erik Ezukanma, WR, Texas Tech

We all saw the amount of times the Giants wide receiver room was depleted through injury last

season. That and the inconsistency’s on the field, which can’t all be put on the receivers. That being

said it needs more talent adding to it. Erik Ezukanma is just that. He is a big and lengthy receiver, with excellent explosiveness. Ezukanma still has room to grow, but comes in as already a talented wide out.

Round 4 Pick 109 – Alontae Taylor, CB, Tennessee

While most other key areas on the team have been below par to put it mildly, the secondary has been good. Adding more depth at corner isn’t going to hurt. Especially when somebody like Alontae Taylor falls into your lap. Taylor is versatile and plays zone and man coverage effectively well. If injuries succumb to the position, Taylor would be capable to step in with some success.

Round 5 Pick 146 – Myron Cunningham, OT, Arkansas

More depth on the offensive line with Myron Cunningham out of Arkansas. There is a handful of things that need to be ironed out in Cunningham’s game but he brings certain skills. At worst he would be make a decent swing tackle.

Round 5 Pick 172 – Hassan Haskins, RB, Michigan

A big back who can handle multiple carries. Haskins wears down defences with his physical running and seems to enjoy contact. Haskins is a running back who can block with the best in pass pro. Definitely be able to fill a handful of roles in the Giants offence.

Round 6 Pick 182 – Greg Dulcich, TE, UCLA

With Evan Engram been an unlikely re-sign the Giants will need to pick up at least 1 tight end. UCLAs Greg Dulcich is a big target but also has good acceleration, which makes him play quicker than you would expect. Round 6 may be under selling him but he seems to be the forgotten man at the Senior Bowl at TE.

Round 7 Pick 225 – Tayland Humphrey, DT, Louisiana

Best player available was defensive tackle Taylan Humphrey out of Louisiana. Humphrey is a powerhouse of a man and uses his brute strength to move blockers and fill gaps in the run game. He doesn’t seem to have much upside on pass defence, but could definitely do a job as a run stuffer.
